Why do we need innovation?

Look ‘innovation’ is a much abused term. Innovation is not just change. It’s positive change (2thinknow definition and Global innovation Conversation).

Some people say how do you decide positive? I say it’s not always easy, it’s impossible to get 100% positive, but something that reasonably and generally improves people’s lives would be close. We accept the negative, but are deeply suspicious of positive.

It’s time we stopped arguing over methods (eg. public or private, listed or private equity) and started looking at outcomes. Is the outcome making the majority better off?

We need to look at broader policies on better healthcare, transport, representation, education and other public infrastructure. There will be a time when the argument over cars versus public transport will seem inane. Public transport must be improved. End of story. To say simply that it has ‘lost’, and cars are the outcome is to cede the game before the hand is played. (This is a popular argument in my home state Victoria).

The State governments of Australia need to get their act together on public transport and other infrastructure. They need to move forward from where they are now, and look at innovation.

Global Warming at it’s current rate of increase, will force their hand. If they don’t act now, it will require drastic action in the future.
