Berner’s Lee on Semantic Web, next big innovation following Web Community

Sir Tim Berners Lee on the next big innovation beyond Web 2.0. That would be the semantic web. Or basically interchangeable data, data from your contact database, talks to data from a website allowing you to file someone you meet online in your contacts. Or an invoice in your accounting system is machine-readable as an invoice on the web.

In other words no more data conversion. This is what XML is all about, but that is one part of it.

If it wasn’t Berners Lee, i’d say perhaps that’s a B I G G G … dream!

That is, Sir Tim Berners-Lee has been right for all the last 2 decades. Read “Weaving the web”. It’s almost prophetic. He is technically the father of the World Wide Web.

Innovation Predictions

So future:

Short-term Web Communities

Medium-term: Semantic Web.

That’s all the innovation we can cope with, as all change takes awhile for theoretical standards to be called into practical play, and to work fully.

What I like is Berners-lee is of the view that infrastructure should be Public, and services should be competitive (even if between open-source & commercial).

Extrapolating to Public/Private Ownership of Capital

Extrapolating this point (and going tangential) to public policy innovation, I still believe in public owned long-term capital infrastructure, as innovative cities have this in abundance. Not all infrastructure can be privately owned. t

So assuming public ownership, extract rent and have private competition on service delivery. Government has an obligation to invest in infrastructure that is capital in nature. it’s also a good investment of public’s money in most cases. Snowy Hydro?

This is, was, and will always be the solution to capital investment in 70-90% of cases, and what should be done with broadband and Telstra.

take care it’s a jungle of Investment bankers out there
