COMMENT, San Francisco, USA — Coffee is important. To world trade, yes. But it’s not all money, coffee is also (more importantly) critical to culture.
How many good ideas have been conceived over a cup of coffee?
How many intellectual battles have been fought in a coffee house until the wee hours?
Voltaire, Franklin and Napoleon all frequented the same Parisian coffee house (at different times)… there must be something in that brew.
Napoleon once left his hat for security whilst he fetched money to pay for the check!
The whole of WordCamp over the weekend was fuelled on vast amounts of coffee and wireless (turn off the Bit Torrent).
Coffee is intellectual innovation
Coffee was the substitute for intellectual-blurring drinks such as beer, wine and liqueurs variously consumed in previous times. Switching to coffee gave the mind a buzz, and intellectual foment.
In the coffee houses many intellectual battles have been duelled. Where would Paris, Vienna, Boston be without coffee?
And Silicon Valley would shut down without coffee. Chai the Valley could live without…
Almost every start-up story goes, we were having a coffee in ….
In London it’s tea, which while appreciate the finer beverage, trying getting decent coffee there… when in London drink tea!
Why Coffee and innovation?
Coffee is the stimulant that percolates in the brain and allows thoughts to flow.
I can’t live without mine in the morning. No ideas. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
Generally a 3-shot espresso, ristretto style is my favourite and has the desired ooomph!
You non-coffee drinkers do not know what you are missing. come to Melbourne, Paris, Vienna, Milan or Roma and see what you are missing.
Take care, and if you’re in Melbourne, I’ll buy you the BEST espresso you ever had.
