COMMENT, Melbourne — Yet another traffic accident. See the Age here: here’s a tip: Drivers will be blamed again. Yet more proof the current state government do not have the ability to deliver decent public transport.

Sylvester on Melbourne Public TransportAs Sylvester would say

Thufferin’ Thuccotash ! we need a Bracks-yard Britz! to fix the Thystem!”

The Choice:

You cannot have it both ways, drive people to use cars, yet fail to improve roads.

Or force people to use public transport, but not provide safe regular clean services.

Make a decision, don’t say one thing and do another. Bracks couldn’t make a decision.

This is the great true story of State Government in Australia:

“Say a lot and do nothing. A secret Carr taught Bracks and the rest.”

And hiring consultants who say that cars are a better choice than public transport is some sort of idiocy and inconsistent with green house gas minimization policies.

The current status quo

In the last few months there have been:

  • Numerous public level crossing accidents, including fatalities
  • Tram derailments
  • Tram smashes

Personally I have seen St Kilda Rd go from one of the best public transport routes in the world, to half hour delays and stoppages without explanation.

One week, several weeks ago 4 days out of 6 trams were delayed for more than 20 minutes on St Kilda Rd (that services a huge number of suburbs) due to breakdowns at the times I was travelling.

The sad thing is that the trains are even worse.

But WHO DOES anything? Nobody in State Government.

Forget Innovation, we’d settle for it working

Every one I talk to about it is enraged. Everyone is angry.

Yet someone must have voted for Bracks? I voted for Baillieu’s team.

Melbourne broadsheet, The Age shut down a blog calling for a public strike on public transport. Citizens were going to boycott, but the Age denied them oxygen.

More of the same. Melbourne goes from world-class transport to worst-class.

And no one seems to care or be able to do anything until the problems are critical.

Are our leaders all too lazy & apathetic?

Are we so busy debating points of view?

Do we only care about mortgages no longer society?

Do we forget the basic concepts of getting on with maintenance, timetables, scheduling, cleanliness?

Does everybody think that a giant Renovation Rescue or Brack-Yard Blitz is going to sweep in and save the day?

The new ticketing system will be a disaster, but the Government don’t care. Press ahead regardless.

This is the last time I write about it here. It’s almost a cliche to complain.

But here’s a prediction this is not going to be the last accident.

You can’t talk your way out of problems. You may actually have to do something about them.

Oh well, nobody seems to care about the decline of Melbourne.
Take care (and don’t bother catching a tram or train.)

  1. You are right!
The whole time Bracks was in power he did nothing at all about the state of Victoria. Nothing works any more. Still Bracksy and his people got paid for what I wonder? For doing nothing??
What happened today with the trams is a real worry. 20 people injured including the tram driver.
What is going on? Public transport is no longer safe for starters. Trams are no longer maintained, passengers still pay. Yet we see groups of 6-7 tickets inspectors only when trams are working, “trying to do their job” but none of them to be seen in a case like today!
I heard the transport minister caught the public transport for a week. I am curious which line did she travelled in?
Did she noticed the safety issues, the constant delays, the filthy trams and trains at all, if that’s the case?
It is so sad to see the decline of public transport in Melbourne!
That is thanks to Steve Bracks and his team… They really made sure nothing was going to work in Victoria. Still they got paid for doing nothing. I do not want to repeat myself, but this is the truth.

Hope people are going to realise for once, this government has to do something about public transport and perhaps replace the useless transport minister with someone else who is willing to do something to improve it and make it safe instead of thinking of a power trip for themselves.
