In Hotels Sleep is the First Star.
TRAVEL COMMENT, Sydney — Having retired at a graceful hour last night, I was hoping for a good night’s sleep. Not possible.

The nice view I had of Darling Harbour, was interrupted (like everything in Sydney) by 24/7 traffic.
All night, traffic roaring past. I slept for several hours, but at 5am I gave up, as the traffic noise kept waking me.
The first star - Sleep
In staying in a hotel as a business traveller I am paying primarily for sleep and a bathroom.
After that I am paying for convenience and amenities.
This is something too few hotels absolutely get.
In London the Park Lane Sheraton did not care. My opinion was it was a gulag for 200 GB Pounds a night. Other travellers I ask say the same.
The London Park Lane Intercontinental, a new “5-star” hotel didn’t care. They had drilling on the floor I was on (from 8am to 6pm). And this for a frequent guest in their chain. No reduction in the tariff either.
The normal response if you politely complain is nothing, or the usual “we apologise, sir your experience didn’t meet your expectations.”
Since when is sleep an expectation and not a biological necessity?
More spin.
Perhaps I should tear up their bill and say sorry that didn’t meet your expectations of me paying.
When you get really upset they do something. But that is a bit late. And it’s tiring being angry, just to get decent service.
If I didn’t want to sleep I’d spend the night in a 24 hour bar….! And save the money.
London and Sydney have very few hotels that get the first star.
The room was really nice, (except maintenance but then they are the laziest people in any hotel).
Sleep is the first star in a hotel.
I’m on my way to grab an over-priced muffin and coffee in a cup that will spill on my tie.
Sigh…
I’ll need 6 shots of espresso today…
Take care,
Christopher.
