REVIEW, Mag Nation, Melbourne & New Zealand — One of my favorite magazine shops, in late 2007, won a prestigious retail award in Melbourne.

Mag Nation Magazine Innovation

You can often find me browsing the magazines, and occasionally spending more than I planned on European or US magazine titles. I like to support small or independent businesses so I also often grab a coffee here and browse.

Chief Magazineologist (sounds like a 2thinknow title!) for Mag Nation, Sahil Merchant commented:

“There is something about magazines that makes them worthwhile and approachable for all.

“Most of the niche publishers that we deal with don’t make all that much money. They do it because they love it. We are honoured to stock all these wonderful titles and as a result we pour our passion into selling them.”

What can I say? Well done!!! Passion should always be applauded!

Supporting smaller niche titles helps overcome the tyranny of distance.

Distant cities need a variety of alternate and diverse media to compensate for the decreased range of real world cross-cultural interactions.

When I’m overseas, I often fill a suitcase with newspapers, clippings, magazines and books that you cannot get in Australia. My last trip to Boston and San Francisco resulted in a full second suitcase each.

I have an addiction to media consuming 10 print magazines, 20 newspapers a week, and online innumerable blogs, wikis and webpages. And of course several books a month (see my recent post for current reads).

Mag Nation is a local way to feed your media addiction. Along with libraries in Melbourne, which are frequently found, often free, and very diverse in their titles.

About Mag nation’s in-storeoffering

Mag Nation encourage coffee in the store. And you are encouraged to browse the magazines. They also provide a valuable cultural exchange through bringing foreign products, as well as niche Australian product.

They have many new ‘art’ magazines found only here.

They have free wireless.

In 2007 as a gala event in Melbourne, the New Zealand business was named the Australian Retailers Association and City of Melbourne’s most innovative retailer for 2007.

Mag Nation is an innovator - a positive social force in the 2thinkow definition.

Disclosure: This is an independent review rewarding innovation agents, like Mag Nation who are responsible for positive social change. The author buys coffee and magazines there, but received no compensation for this review.
