COMMENT, Global – The places where we eat and live are our cities.

2thinknow rank and recognize innovation cities. Cities are important.

But there is a smaller unit that is critical to social change. This true key to positive change in our society is the role of where we eat and talk.

Families around the kitchen table.

It’s where families come together, eat, fight and discuss.

And despite feminism, it is still largely a female manager of the home and kitchen table. Let’s be realistic!

That’s why, as Western democracies are run by a cabinet of ministers, our lives and families need a cabinet of ministers.

We need a ‘Kitchen Table Cabinet’ for our families.

Many Western families grab meals at any time of the day or night. Eating alone. Eating take-away food.

The key to other family-centric cultures such as the Greeks, Chinese or Balkans is that the family eats together. 1 or 2 meals a day at least.

Never under-estimate the basics - meals around a table

The Government of our nations are run by ministers around a table in a cabinet. The most family oriented cultures run their families around meals.

So today, no matter what your family is, or where they are, here’s an idea for positive social change.

Try and get your family together, without the TV, to talk about your lives and days around the kitchen table.

Each person take a turn discussing their day.

Say a prayer if you are religious. Grace is important for many of us.

If you don’t have family nearby, try and get together with a group of close friends. It’s not the same, but it’s better than eating alone.

Buy a table of you don’t have one. Even if it’s second hand.

It’s the secret to change in our lives. For all change starts local.

And you don’t get more local or meaningful than change within your immediate family.

And so much meaningful social change globally starts locally with one person, or family. So make a date around the dinner table today.

We all might eat better as well. It’s the simple things that work.
