COMMENT, Cuba — So we know Fidel Castro, leader of Cuba, is nearly a memory.

Finally the new leader, albeit his brother Raul, has taken some steps to catch Cuba up with the rest of the world. Sure these are basic steps, and sure there are more ways to go.

The New Cuba, Economic reforms

But in reality, there has been movement from what many in US politics regard as a recalcitrant regime. And where’s there’s movement there is possibility.

Here’s top 7 notable changes since Raul Castro, took over:

7. Cuba is seeking foreign investment in energy and other sectors… most recently from India. See Cuba seeks investment from India in energy sector and Largest ever Cuban trade team in India, eyes Nano

6. Talk of Cubans being allowed free travel, and civil rights, thanks to his 46 yo daughter.

5. Change of the Education Minister, largely symbolic, but education is the basis of the Cuban strength, and their once proud free education is crippled by poor management.

4. Keeping his brother Fidel as figurehead, whilst changing policy direction, reducing destabilization internal to the cabinet, or a coup.

3. Possibility of a rapprochement with USA, with an Obama Presidency. This is not done… but by easing up on the Fidel rhetoric, and actions, Raul has a chance.

2. Allowing Cubans to have personal computers. Sure they may be not affordable to most, but information is always the first casualty of dictators.

1. Economic reform process commenced, slowly, but some good steps once again.

It’s slow, but it’s a crack in the wall, and Cuban change has commenced! There is a potential of a brighter future depending on various US and regional trends, and a suspending of rhetoric over reality.

It looks like, at this stage, Raul is trying to take Cuba towards dealing with economic reality. And that can only be positive for Cuba, and long-run, the USA, and broader Latin America.
